When Your Tooth Needs an Extraction

Many people feel anxious about going to the dentist for extraction because they imagine that it will be a painful experience. However, if you are currently living with persistent toothache, having the affected tooth removed can bring you quick relief. Dr. Ricardo Rios is a dentist at Middle Hope Family Dental in Newburgh. He provides full family dental services including tooth extractions.

Does Your Tooth Need Extracting?

Here are some of the typical signs and symptoms Newburgh dental patients experience when they need a tooth extraction:

  • Severe and persistent toothache
  • Stiffness or pain in your jaw
  • A history of gum disease
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Pain that’s worse when you bite or chew

During your regular checkup, your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction for one of the following reasons:

  • If you have a tooth that is damaged beyond repair
  • You have a tooth with severe decay or infection
  • You have an impacted tooth

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

If you have an infection, you may need to take antibiotics. Your procedure will take place at Dr. Rios’ dental office. He will give you a local anesthetic so that you feel no discomfort during the procedure. Once the anesthetic is working, Dr. Rios will gently loosen your tooth with a special dental instrument. He will then use forceps to extract the tooth from your gum. Once your tooth has been removed, Dr. Rios will clean out the socket and if necessary, close your gum with one or two stitches. He will ask you to bite down gently onto a piece of gauze to stem the bleeding.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you live in or around Newburgh, NY, and you need a tooth extraction, call Dr. Rios at (845) 565-4150 to schedule an appointment.
